To attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Chinese officials from Huawei and Xiaomi a will leave two weeks early and be quarantined.

Many Chinese companies face this dilemma as the Mobile World Congress is held in Barcelona in late February.

The Chinese groups Huawei and Xiaomi  have told their European customers that the Chinese officials and equipment would leave two weeks early and be quarantined. They also decided to rely more on their European employees – or residents in Europe – and a little less on those based in China also chinese journalists will have to settle for a streaming conference.

In an official statement published by the South Korean manufacturer LG, they indicate that “putting the safety and health of their employees, partners and customers” they have decided to cancel their exposure and assistance to this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. They take this precautionary measure due to the spread of the coronavirus at an international level, because of the risk that international travel can pose in this situation.

Given that LG Electronics will not have a presence in the Mobile World Congress, the company has announced that they will hold separate events where they will announce the products they have prepared for this 2020. When these presentations will be made, where and what will be announced is something that we currently cannot to know.

On the other hand, ZTE will cancel its conference on the 25th for press at the MWC, as they have indicated to The Verge and confirmed in a statement:

“With the theme” Towards 5G business success, “ZTE will demonstrate during the Mobile World Congress 2020 its most outstanding achievements in 5G innovations and comprehensive 5G solutions in both 5G Network Practices and 5G Business Exploration.

In addition, we will share with our attendees our experience and success stories in the global field of 5G network construction. We will be at booth 3F30 of the Mobile World Congress in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Vía. The ZTE device press conference scheduled for February 25, which is just one of the many planned activities, has been canceled. However, we will show a wide variety of new 5G devices at the ZTE booth during MWC 2020, as planned. ”

The manufacturer has not only emphasized its presence at the fair, it also makes public the special measures it will take regarding the safety of employees and attendees at its stand, guided by the advice of the Chinese Department of Health and WHO, which They are:

“ZTE will ensure that all its employees from China have had no symptoms during the two weeks prior to their departure and arrival at the MWC. In addition, they will be required to be insulated for two weeks to ensure sanitary safety at our stand.

ZTE will ensure that all managers of your company participating in the meetings and events will go through isolation in Europe at least two weeks before the MWC.

ZTE will ensure that the stand and its equipment are disinfected daily.

ZTE will ensure that the stand staff will come from countries other than China, coming mainly from Europe. At the same time, the company is working with the GSMA to ensure that your visit is safe, comfortable and profitable. ”

Regarding the other manufacturers, there is no official statement of what they are going to do about it. Sony, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, Lenovo … In principle, it is supported by the Mobile World Congress 2020. The event will begin on February 24 in Barcelona.

LA GSMA  (organizes the Mobile World Congress event) has called for calm in an official statement in which they insist that the event will be held as planned and taking the necessary precautionary and hygiene measures. For this year the organizers indicate that they will add extra medical posts, greater hygiene at critical points and online awareness campaigns among other measures. It does not seem enough for some manufacturers not to leave the fair.

The Mobile World Congress welcomes thousands of people every year, in 2019 they closed with a record 109,000 attendees, a figure they expect for this year as well. The influx of public is immense and also affects everything that surrounds the MWC, such as public transport in Barcelona. A risk that LG and ZTE do not want to expose their employees or customers.

04 February 2020, London: The GSMA continues to monitor and assess the potential impact of the Coronavirus on its MWC20 events held annually in Barcelona, Shanghai and Los Angeles and as well as the Mobile 360 Series of regional conferences. The GSMA confirms that there is minimal impact on the event thus far. MWC Barcelona 24-27 February 2020, will proceed as planned, across all venues at Fira Gran Via Fira Montjuïc and La Farga L’Hospitalet, including YoMo and Four Years From Now (4YFN).

As previously stated, the GSMA has implemented many measures to help to mitigate the spread of the virus and is continuing to add other actions regularly. Measures in place include;

Increased cleaning and disinfection programme across all high-volume touchpoints, e.g. catering areas, surfaces, handrails, WCs, entrances/exits, public touch-screens, etc. along with the use of correct cleaning/sanitising materials and products.

Increased onsite medical support
Awareness campaign via online and onsite info-share and signage
Availability of sanitising and disinfection materials for public use

Measures added this week include;

The GSMA is building on its existing plans to protect the health of our attendees, clients and staff at MWC Barcelona. GSMA colleagues around the world are taking strong measures to contain and lessen any further spread of the virus. These measures include adhering to advice from the WHO and other health authorities, respecting travel restrictions where they exist, arriving early in Spain to allow time for self-quarantine and ensuring access to masks.
