Motional Unveils Hyundai Loniq 5 RoboTaxi for the First Time
Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the design of the IONIQ 5 robot taxi on the 31st (Korean time) and announced that it will exhibit the real vehicle at the ‘2021 IAA Mobility’ held in Munich, Germany from September 7 to 12.

In order to develop the IONIQ 5 robot taxi, Hyundai Motor Group worked with Motional, an autonomous driving joint venture with Aptiv, an American autonomous driving technology company, and applied the jointly developed autonomous driving technology to the vehicle.
Hyundai Motor Group is developing the autonomous driving technology applied to the IONIQ 5 robot taxi to the level 4 standard of the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Level 4 is the level at which the vehicle’s automated system recognizes and judges the situation and drives, and in an emergency, the vehicle can respond itself without driver intervention.
The IONIQ 5 RoboTaxi is Motional’s first commercial fully autonomous vehicle and will be put into service in the US in 2023 for ride-hailing services that take passengers to a desired point.
Previously, in April, Motional announced that it had selected the IONIQ 5 as the next-generation robo-taxi vehicle platform, and announced that it plans to mass-supply fully autonomous vehicles to Lyft, a ride-sharing company, in 2023.
The IONIQ 5 robot taxi was born through years of collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and Motional to develop and test autonomous driving technology.
Based on accumulated experience, Hyundai Motor Group applied a large number of high-level autonomous driving technologies corresponding to autonomous driving level 4 to the IONIQ 5 robot taxi together with Motional.
First, the autonomous driving sensor technology such as radar, lidar, and camera was advanced, and more than 30 sensors were installed in the vehicle so that the vehicle can detect and predict the driving situation in 360 degrees.
In addition, redundancy was applied to the main system of the vehicle. Redundancy is a dual configuration of clause, braking, power, and communication, and when the corresponding function does not work properly, an auxiliary device replaces it and helps the vehicle to run smoothly and safely.
Through this, the IONIQ 5 RoboTaxi has strengthened the double safety system so that passengers can safely move to their destination.
In addition, the IONIQ 5 robot taxi is equipped with ‘remote vehicle support technology‘ so that it can be driven stably even in unexpected situations on the road. This is a technology that enables the control center to immediately connect to the autonomous driving system of the robotaxi to provide a new route or to provide necessary support quickly when a vehicle passes a construction area or a road is flooded.
