Netflix is Most Watched on LG’s Smart Screens

The streaming giant has defeated YouTube, Google’s video platform, in a battle over Israeli users of LG’s smart screens. The Korean giant also figures: At the height of the first closure, in April, viewing hours jumped by more than 100%.

Netflix was the most popular application on LG’s smart screens in Israel between January and July 2020, according to data provided by the Korean company to Ynet. The American streaming service leads in total hours of use, as well as in total opening events. The only popularity index in which Netflix is in second place is the total number of screens in which the application was activated – an index in which YouTube actually wins.

The average Netflix user on LG screens watched 12 hours of video service in July, more than Cellcom TV (about 10 hours a month) and Partner TV (about 6.5 hours a month). On YouTube, the average user watches about 6 hours a month, while the music service Spotify plays with users an average of two and a half hours a month.

The applications also stand out in some ways that may not be familiar to the average Israeli consumer, such as Smart IPTV. These are apps that can be used to watch Internet channels, not necessarily in a particularly legal way. Prominent in their absence from the list of 10 most popular Russian-speaking apps. Only one of them, Lime HD TV, managed to screw up in one of the indices. However, when you look at all these apps together (IVI, Lime and Vintera), they reach about 30,000 users a month.

2020 is, of course, no ordinary year. Since the beginning of the year, Israel – together with the whole world – has been dealing with the corona plague. As is well known, the virus has led to a significant increase in the use of home television. This is what the graph of LG device usage from January to June looks like.

If you expand your gaze a little, beyond 2020, you can see a number of interesting trends. Netflix grew by 79% a year, but it was not the app with the highest growth, but is only in fourth place. The app with the highest growth is Partner TV, which grew by 143% a year, and Amazon Prime Video with 140% growth. Spotify is in third place, with 140%. The only major app that is actually smaller from 2019 to 2020 is Walla! VOD, with a 9% reduction in usage.

In total, hundreds of thousands of users of LG’s smart screens in Israel used the various applications 3.84 million hours in June 2019, while in June 2020 this number increased by 22 percent, to 4.73 million hours. LG’s data comes amid unprecedented demand for TV screens since the beginning of the year: research firm Trendforce reported last week that in the last quarter, 62.05 million screens were sold worldwide – up 12.9% from last year.
