The British royal family has published a poem in honor of the  Queen’s late husband Prince Philip. The lines from Simon Armitage, who was named the so-called Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019, accompany a compilation of photos from the life of Philip.

“A montage to commemorate the extraordinary life of the Duke of Edinburgh, unique for his sheer wealth of experience and the war generation to which he belonged,” tweeted the palace. The poem called “The Patriarchs – An Elegy” was written especially for the funeral service. It pays homage to Philips’ outstanding career in the Royal Navy and describes his generation as “husbands to duty” and “great-grandfathers from birth”. Philip joined the Navy in 1939 and served in the Mediterranean, among others, during World War II.
