Shopify Cancels Annual Conference due to Coronavirus

Shopify says the recent outbreak of the new coronavirus prompted it to cancel its annual conference.

The Ottawa-based e-commerce giant said its Unite conference is scheduled to take place in Toronto on May 7, but evolving public health concerns have thwarted these plans.

The company said in a statement to The Canadian Press that it believes that canceling the conference is the best option to ensure that the health and safety of attendees is not at risk.

Shopify is in the process of contacting those who planned to attend, issuing refunds on tickets and figuring out how to advertise the products and services it plans to reveal during the conference.

According to the company, more than 1,000 people from around the world have attended the conference in the past two years. At these events, attendees were the first to discover the company’s plans for its distribution network in the United States and its first physical location in California.
