The 41st Moscow International Film Festival Began

The 41st Moscow International Film Festival began its work: the opening ceremony was held on April 18 at the Rossiya cinema.

A year ago, the MIFF, which was always held in the summer, was postponed to April because of the World Cup that Russia hosted. Many were upset (Moscow spring is not the best time for the red tracks), but the decision turned out to be strategically correct: the attendance of the festival has increased significantly. That is why the former summer schedule has not been returned. Festival President Nikita Mikhalkov fully supports the decision:

“We still had a hard time. I understand the bright sunny weather, but most of the people are leaving, and this is not very convenient” said the director shortly before the ceremony at a press conference.

Without Mikhalkov at the opening, of course, it was completely different, and the stars of Russian cinema, who were not afraid to freeze on the red carpet in dresses made of silk, chiffon and other fine fabrics, were blowing for him. In the afternoon, the air in Moscow “warmed up” to 11 degrees, but the guests of the festival seemed to pretend that spring was already in full swing.

The choice of dresses of many participants of the social event turned out to be quite traditional: today not one MIFF guest made a bet on black and red in the center of Moscow. And some seemed to have forgotten the color of the track and as a result merged with it together in the photographs.

Chopard once again became a partner of the MIFF-2019, which did not leave the images of star guests at the ceremony without the shine of precious stones.

The opening ceremony, which was delayed by 45 minutes, began with the appearance on the stage of Elizaveta Boyarskaya, who, as a presenter, gave the floor to Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky. After his speech, the presentation of the jury of all three competitions of the MIFF-2019 began. The chairman of the jury of the main competition, the Korean film director Kim Ki Duk, promised that each picture would be given maximum attention. Following him, with a wand in his hand, Nikita Mikhalkov went up to the stage to present the golden chain of jury chairman Kim Ki Dooku.

In addition to the Korean master, the films of the participants of the festival this year will be evaluated by the Russian actress Irina Apeksimova, the Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu and the Italian scriptwriter Valiya Santella.

Kim Ki Duk received the first for the MIFF-2019 award – Golden George for his contribution to the development of world cinema. Then all the guests in the hall were invited to watch a film of the opening ceremony – “The Emperor of Paris” (L’Empereur de Paris) with Vincent Cassel in the lead role. The film director Jean-François Richet arrived

The program of the main competition MIFF-2019, which will be held from April 18 to April 25, includes 13 films from Iran, France, Turkey, China and other countries – three films from them are Russian (“Epidemia”, directed by Pavel Kostomarov, “Sunday” Svetlana Proskurina, “Above me the sun does not set”

The Moscow International Film Festival is considered one of the oldest in the world: it was first held in 1935, but then a 24-year break followed. The work of the festival was resumed in 1959, from which the official countdown now begins.
