The Contact Group for Venezuela Meets Today

The International Contact Group for Venezuela sponsored by the European Union meets on Monday and Tuesday in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, in search of a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan crisis.

The group – which includes Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Bolivia – will address recent events in Venezuela, as well as the need to move forward on a solution peaceful and democratic, which goes through the holding of new presidential elections in the country and prevent a further aggravation of the humanitarian situation.

In a statement on May 1, the group made it clear that the latest events in Venezuela confirmed “the need and urgency” to achieve “a political, peaceful and democratic solution” and rejected “strongly” the use of force.

The situation worsened on April 30 with the failed attempt of the opposition to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro through “Operation Libertad” within the framework of which the opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was released.

The European Union has avoided an endorsement to the ‘Operation Freedom’ launched by Juan Guaido although it has not wanted to censor it and has also appealed to a peaceful and democratic solution and to the “maximum containment” in a communique of the high representative Federica Mogherini, agreed with the twenty-eight.

The European diplomatic service avoided assessing the decision of the Spanish government to host Leopoldo Lopez as a guest at the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas because it is “a national decision” but he did remind the Maduro government that it must respect its diplomatic immunity “in all the cases “after the Supreme Court of Venezuela has ordered his search and capture.

Guaido acknowledged on Saturday that the opposition’s plan to overthrow Maduro did not work and that they expected more soldiers to desert in an interview with The Washington Post.
