Prohibition will start on Friday and will be valid for 30 days; exception will be made for the UK. Restrictions do not apply to those who have a permanent residence in the USA and immediate relatives of US citizens.

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday (11) that the country will suspend travel from European countries to the United States for a period of 30 days, starting this Friday. Measures were taken to try to contain the new coronavirus, on the same day that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Covid-19 pandemic.

Following Trump’s speech, the Department of Homeland Security published a note explaining that the measure is valid for foreigners who were in the 26 countries of the Schengen Zone in the 14 days prior to the attempt to return to the U.S. Thus, the United Kingdom, which has 460 cases, does not fit the bill.

The restrictions do not apply to those who have a permanent residence in the USA and to “immediate relatives” of US citizens

In a TV statement, Trump said Americans are “responding with great speed and professionalism” to the crisis. The president also accused Europe of not taking the necessary measures to prevent the growth of the pandemic.

Trump compared the measure to the flight restrictions imposed on China and Iran at the start of the new coronavirus crisis. According to him, Europe was wrong in not doing the same.

“We have taken action to save lives in relation to China, and now we are doing the same with Europe,” he said.
As of the last update of this report, there were more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 in the USA. According to a Johns Hopkins University survey, 36 people died in the country from the disease.

‘It’s not a financial crisis’

President  Trump also said that the situation is not a financial crisis, and that he will take emergency action – with support from Congress – to provide financial assistance to workers who are sick, quarantined or on leave to care for people affected by the coronavirus.

“This is just a temporary moment that we will overcome as a nation and as a world,” he said.

Trump also said he is instructing government sectors that deal with small businesses to ensure capital and liquidity for those affected by the coronavirus, by providing loans at low interest rates.

He also asked Congress to vote in favor of tax cuts to help combat possible economic losses caused by the virus.
