Turkish Election Body Confirms Results Of Nov. 1 Vote

gggggTurkey’s election body has confirmed the results of the country’s Nov. 1 election in which the ruling party regained its parliamentary majority, setting the ball rolling for the formation of a new government.

The High Election Board released the certified results of the vote on Thursday, confirming that the Justice and Development Party, founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, won 317 seats in the 550-seat parliament. The main opposition Republican People’s Party won 134 seats. The pro-Kurdish party gained 59 seats while nationalists got 40.

Erdogan is expected to ask Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to form a new government next week.

The election was a re-run of an election in June in which the party lost its 13-year majority. Davutoğlu failed to form a coalition government after that vote.
