TURKSTAT announced labor force data for December. Accordingly, unemployment decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 11.2 percent in December 2021.

Turkish Statistical Institute  announced the labor force data for December. Accordingly, unemployment decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 11.2 percent in December 2021, while the number of unemployed increased by 2 thousand to 3 million 794 thousand people.

The number of people employed increased by 236 thousand people in December compared to the previous month and became 30 million 141 thousand people, while the employment rate increased by 0.3 points to 47.0 percent.

The labor force participation rate rose 0.3 percentage points to 52.9 in December.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT 20.8 PERCENT

Unemployment among the young population in the 15-24 age group was 20.8 percent with a monthly decrease of 1.6 percentage points, and the employment rate became 34.1 percent with an increase of 0.6 points. The labor force participation rate in this age group, on the other hand, decreased by 0.2 points compared to the previous month and became 43.0 percent.

0.5 POINT INCREASE IN BROAD-DEFINED UNEMPLOYMENT

The rate of underemployment due to time, potential labor and the unemployed increased by 0.5 percentage points on a monthly basis to 22.6 percent in December. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 15.4 percent, the combined rate of potential workforce and unemployed was 18.7 percent.

INFORMAL WORK 27.8 PERCENT

The rate of unregistered employees, which shows the share of those working without being affiliated to a social security institution in total employees, decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 27.8 percent. The rate of informal workers in the non-agricultural sector increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 18.3 percent.
