Claas Tractors will Soon be Driving with Refrigerator Chips

There is a rumor in the press that agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas would buy household appliances in order to build the chips they contain into their machines.

Chips are currently in short supply worldwide. Cars, televisions and tractors cannot be built without chips. Claas is said to have shown itself to be particularly creative in order to compensate for the deficiency in production. The agricultural machinery manufacturer is said to have ordered large quantities of household appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers in order to remove their chips, reprogram them and install them in their own machines. “That is all pulled by the hair,” says Matthias Mumme, head of the specialist press at Claas.

Chips from RV refrigerators?
The stories about the recycling of chips are getting more and more curious. The rumors have been increasing recently. “The best thing was that Claas would take chips out of motorhome refrigerators. But that doesn’t work, ”explains Mumme. The rumors may have emerged in the course of internal research that Claas regularly carries out in order to find alternative sources of supply for semiconductors, circuit boards, plastic, steel, etc. “The rumor could have been spread by one of the manufacturers who inquired in the course of the research.

Long waiting times slow down production
What sounds funny has been a bitter reality for agricultural machinery manufacturers since the beginning of the corona pandemic. Manufacturers could build far more machines if all supplier components were available. Despite full order books, production stalls again and again because, in addition to electronic components, tires, seats and hydraulic components are also missing or are delivered too late. This not only leads to delays in production, but also means that farmers who have ordered tractors or self-propelled harvesters have to wait much longer than in the time before Corona. At Claas there are delivery delays, but the majority of the machines can be delivered, says Mumme.

It is not yet possible to predict when the supply crisis will be over. Since all raw materials are scarce, there will be difficulties in the supply chains for months. The fact that Claas orders washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators and remodels their chips remains a myth despite the tense situation and few chips available.
