Corona Virus Variant Also in Switzerland

While the variant of the coronavirus that appeared in Great Britain was detected for the first time in Switzerland, the corona-related return journey of British tourists began on Thursday. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) was reported to 4898 new corona cases within 24 hours.

Since Thursday, people from Great Britain stranded in Switzerland have been able to return to their homeland thanks to an exemption. Two Swiss planes took off in the morning from Zurich in the direction of London Heathrow.

British tourists did not have to check in separately. According to Zurich Airport, the usual measures, i.e. wearing a mask and keeping your distance, applied. Swiss did not disclose how many people were on board. A Swiss machine also took off from Geneva for Great Britain.

Another flight from Zurich to Heathrow will follow on Christmas Day and two flights are planned for December 26th. All of these flights are normal scheduled flights, not repatriation flights through the federal government.

After new coronavirus variants became known in Great Britain and South Africa, Switzerland took measures to find any mutations in the virus. Various samples from people who tested positive are currently being sequenced for a possible mutation in the virus.
The mutation in question was detected in two samples, as the BAG announced on Thursday. The persons concerned are known by name to the BAG. The cantons from which these samples came were made aware by the FOPH that this more contagious variant could possibly circulate among them. The BAG did not disclose which cantons are involved.

Meanwhile, BAG in Switzerland and Liechtenstein were reported 4898 new coronavirus infections within 24 hours on Thursday. At the same time, the BAG registered 103 new deaths and 193 hospital admissions.

In week 51 (December 14 to 20), a total of 29,441 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded compared to 30,162 in the previous week, according to the epidemiological weekly report published by the BAG on Thursday. The number of reported cases fell by 2.4 percent compared to the previous week.

Regionally, the picture is heterogeneous: the incidence in the cantons and in Liechtenstein was between 161 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and week in Appenzell Innerrhoden and 484 in Ticino, and 625 in Liechtenstein.

The designated Federal President 2021 Guy Parmelin was allowed to lift his corona quarantine after visiting London on Christmas Eve. Parmelin had remained symptom-free for the past ten days, said a spokesman for the Department of Economics, Education and Research (WBF) when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. He was allowed to lift the quarantine on Thursday evening.

Anyone who has entered Switzerland from Great Britain since December 14th has to be in quarantine for ten days. The entire Federal Council decided on Monday and imposed an entry ban for travelers from Great Britain. The reason was newly discovered coronavirus mutations, which are probably more contagious than the virus types known to date.

Parmelin went to London on December 14th. There he had signed an agreement on the mobility of service providers with Elizabeth Truss, Minister for International Trade.
