FedEx Pilots Hold Labor Talks Delay New Freighter Purchase Decision

FedEx (FDX-US) is in talks with Boeing (BA-US) and Airbus for next-generation freighters as the e-commerce market expands, industry sources said, but the courier giant is in labor talks with pilots The decision to purchase is delayed.
FedEx, the world’s largest cargo airline, is also the latest to compete after Boeing launched a version of its 777X freighter last week to compete with the all-new Airbus A350 freighter, as air cargo demand suffers from soaring online shopping, supply chain disruptions and passenger transport. Flights are also starting to carry the excitement of cargo.
“Cargo is the only business in the jet market that has fully recovered and is still growing,” said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst at AeroDynamic Advisory. “And because the twin-aisle market is very sluggish, orders for wide-body freighters are the only silver lining.”
FedEx was at one point considered a potential customer for the 777X, and joined Qatar Airways at the White House signing ceremony, but a decision is now not expected until this summer.
FedEx is in talks with pilots over compensation and retirement, two people familiar with the matter said. Pilots believe they have helped companies hit record profits and keep the economy afloat during the pandemic, but discussions could be strained by immediate big investments.
“The aircraft purchase is a strategic business decision, and we defer any new commitments as we evaluate and prioritize potential capital investments,” a FedEx spokesman said.
The Airline Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents FedEx employees, said it hoped the two sides would reach an agreement that affirms their roles. “Clearly there is still significant room for bargaining,” a spokesman said.
FedEx, based in Memphis, Tennessee, has long been a Boeing customer, with 83 percent of its main fleet in 777s, 767s and 757s, as well as traditional McDonnell Douglas jets, but it also has 67 Airbus A300s in its fleet. -600.
Barring an accident, the Boeing 777X is seen as likely to get a FedEx order, but any delay would give Airbus a chance to win.
