Switzerland Donates $ 5 Million in Humanitarian Aid to North Korea

Switzerland has donated about 5 million US dollars in humanitarian aid to North Korea, making it one of the largest donors to North Korea this year, the data showed Wednesday. Switzerland’s contributions to North Korea this year amounted to $ 7.8 million, accounting for 49.6 percent of the total funding provided by aid agencies.

Reports indicate that North Korea faces severe food shortages due to global sanctions and unfavorable weather conditions.

The World Food Program (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recently announced that North Korea’s crop production last year reached its lowest level since 2008 and an estimated 10 million people, or about 40 percent of its population, are in desperate need of food.

Last week, South Korea announced a plan to donate $ 8 million to international agencies, including the World Food Program, to help address malnutrition and health problems facing pregnant women and children in the north.
