The end of Alitalia Already has a Date

Faced with the thousands of passengers who await refunds for the cancellation of their flights, the Italian Government has created a fund of 100 million euros.

The end of Alitalia, the iconic Italian flag carrier, has already been dated. With the authorization of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, it will end its activities on October 15, to make way for its state successor “Italia Transporto Aereo” (ITA).

Through a statement, the company announced that starting tomorrow it will cancel all flights from October 15 and will begin a process of refunds and rescheduling tickets with an estimated deadline for October 14.

“In order to guarantee total consumer protection, it will be possible to replace the flight with another equivalent operated by Alitalia before October 14; otherwise, a full refund of the ticket will also be possible”, informs the flagship airline through its website .

Faced with the thousands of passengers who await refunds for the cancellation of their flights, the Italian Government has created a fund of 100 million euros, an amount that will also finance the tickets that Alitalia has already sold and that require relocation to other companies. He also announced that the new company will receive an initial public injection of 1.5 billion euros.

The entry of the new Italian airline ITA begins to take shape after obtaining the flight authorization from the Ente Nazionale de Aviazione Civile (ENAC). In this way, the heir airline is authorized to take off and, as of midnight this Wednesday, to start selling its tickets at points such as airports and travel agencies, and through its temporary website.

Likewise, at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 25, the company called the unions to negotiate the new working conditions. The next day the selection process of workers will begin, which will initially add up to almost 3,000 employees, who will have to have the Green Pass to comply with the health protections product of the pandemic.

The takeoff will be gradual and will have 52 aircraft available, which will travel, so far, to the cities of New York and Tokyo, Boston and Miami, and will also connect Rome and Milan with the most important cities of the continent, such as London and Paris.

To get the money back, passengers who bought their ticket on the Alitalia website must manage, through this channel, the cancellation. In turn, the airline indicated that affected users can call the call-center or contact the travel agency where the service was contracted, depending on the case.

Meanwhile, those who have booked flights from October 15 onwards, to or from any destination in the world, through the frequent flyer program MilleMiglia, must contact the call center before October 14 to reschedule the trip on flights of partner companies, which are part of the SkyTeam alliance. In turn, those who wish to cancel the trip can request the re-credit of miles, the refund of taxes and surcharges.
