Volvo: Rival of the Tesla Model 3 Arrives

The Google operating system will manage the multimedia system of future Volvo cars

The top manager of Volvo’s research and development department Henrik Green confirmed that, the rival of the Tesla Model 3 that will arrive in 2020 will be the first model of the Scandinavian House to be able to count on Google’s Android operating system.

But the future Polelstar 2 will not be the only one to arrive with this new technology, even the new XC40 will soon be able to count on the new generation of the infotainment system, as well as all the other models based on the CMA modular platform.

Same fate also for the Link & Co models that, like the S60 and XC60, will be equipped with this system with the next restyling that will arrive in about three years.

In the case of the S90 and V90, the wait will be extended by a few more months, given that Volvo has announced that the third generation of the XC90 will be able to enjoy the Google platform, taking advantage of the evolution of the second generation of the SPA architecture.

The Swedish brand announced during the month of May that the voice assistant would be integrated into the Sensus infotainment system of its current model generation, allowing it to control Google Play Store, Google Maps and Google Assistant dome applications.

Henrik Green explained: “There were resistance to accepting that Google would enter the Swedish model’s on-board computer, but now it has become a necessity that will allow us to offer a new experience to customers by accessing from any other device, as well as avoiding high development investment costs. and have a permanent partner as a guarantee of quality and benefits.

Euro NCAP performs a series of crash tests on each model tested:
– a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
– an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
– a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
– a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver’s door

A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.

Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.

The Volvo S60 is a saloon version of the V60 estate. Euro NCAP has verified that the results of the S60 are as good or better than those of the V60. Accordingly, the rating presented here is based on the assessment of the Volvo V60.
