Biden and Xi Jinping will have a Video Meeting Before the end of the Year

After meeting with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Switzerland on Wednesday, Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Committee’s Foreign Affairs Commission, a senior U.S. government official stated that the U.S. and China reached an agreement in principle. The heads of state will hold an online meeting before the end of the year. The official also stated that the meeting between Yang Jiechi and Sullivan was the most substantial of the contacts between the heads of state and below, but it should not be regarded as the thawing of the relations between the two countries.

Both China and the United States gave positive comments on the meeting between Yang Jiechi and Sullivan

According to US media, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday that during the meeting between Yang Jiechi and Sullivan, “We did reach an agreement in principle to hold an online bilateral (heads of state) meeting before the end of this year.” The White House spoke. Jen Psaki also pointed out that he is still studying the timing and details of the meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping.

The above-mentioned senior official said, “In general, today’s dialogue is the most meaningful and substantial contact we have had so far at the level of the head of state.” He added that Washington hopes that this meeting will become a “future contact”.

However, he said that this meeting should not be regarded as the unfreezing of relations between the two countries.

He said, “We are trying to achieve a stable state between the United States and China. In this state, we are able to compete fiercely, but we must manage this competition responsibly.”

Chinese state media also gave positive comments on the meeting between Yang Jiechi and Sullivan.

According to reports, the meeting was constructive and beneficial to mutual understanding. The two sides agreed to take action to implement the spirit of the call between the two heads of state on September 10, strengthen strategic communication, properly manage differences, avoid conflict and confrontation, seek mutual benefit and win-win results, and work together to push China-US relations back on the right track of healthy and stable development.
