Connecting A Car to the Internet Puts it at Greater Risk of Remote Attack

The world of auto hacking is driven by security researchers whose goal is to find the smallest loophole and exploit it to the fullest. This year’s Black Hat Security Conference, while virtual, brought its fair share of surprises.

Security researchers from Team Sky-Go, Qihoo 360’s automotive hacking unit, discovered more than a dozen vulnerabilities in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class car that allowed them to open its doors remotely and start the engine. Most modern cars are equipped with an Internet connection, which gives passengers access to entertainment, navigation and on-board routes, as well as numerous radio stations. But connecting a car to the internet puts it at greater risk of remote attacks like when Miller and Valasek hijacked a Jeep, which ended up in a ditch.

Although vehicle safety has improved over the past 5 years, Sky-Go researchers have shown that even one of the most recent Mercedes-Benz models is not immune to attack. After more than a year of research, the end result was a series of 19 vulnerabilities that formed an attack chain allowing the vehicle to be remotely controlled. First, the researchers built a test bench to reverse-engineer the car’s components and investigate its physical vulnerabilities.
