In 2019, French Start-ups of the AI have Become the Most Financed in Europe

For the first time in 2019, French start-ups in artificial intelligence are at the forefront of investment in Europe. They accumulated 1.14 billion euros in fundraising between 2014 and 2019, according to the first results of a study by France Digitale and Roland Berger unveiled on October 23rd.

There has never been so much money invested in French startups and this reality is even more true in the field of artificial intelligence. On the occasion of the conference “France is AI”, held Wednesday, October 23 at the incubator Station F in Paris, the France Digitale association publishes the first results of a study it conducted with the firm Roland Berger on the financing of French start-ups of the IA.

According to this study, for the first time in 2019, the amounts invested in French start-ups of the AI ​​exceed those invested in the young shoots of the other European countries but also of Israel, one of the countries in point in the field. From 2014 to 2019, these amounts reached 1.14 billion euros. This places French start-ups just ahead of UK ones, which have been funded for 1.11 billion euros. Fundraising of young Israeli AI shoots amounted to 810 million euros over the same period.

435 start-ups, 102 more than in 2018

These figures are unveiled at the same time as a map of French start-up companies of the IA, numbering 435 according to France Digitale at October 23, 2019. It is 102 nuggets more than the 333 recorded in 2018 at the same date .

Europe raises mostly American funds

Innovative entrepreneurship seems to be the strength of France in the field of artificial intelligence. For the rest, the United Kingdom is the engine of the European ecosystem. The country’s investments in European start-ups of the IA amounted to 1.08 billion euros between 2014 and 2019. In comparison, over the same period, those from France were close to 420 millions of euros and those from Germany the 317 million euros.

But the money raised by European start-up AI comes primarily from the United States, with 1 230 billion euros invested between 2014 and 2019. Over the same period, 99 European nuggets were acquired by actors US. The United States and China continue to dominate the sector globally.
