Macaron has Come Under Fire After “Notre Dame Proposal”

French President Emmanuel Macaron has come under fire recently after announcing an international competition to design a new tower for Notre Dame Cathedral.

McCron said he hoped the church would be rebuilt by 2024, when Paris hosts the Olympic Games, but raised concerns that those who prefer to return the church to its original state, unchanged, as a national icon, are concerned.

“The tower was not part of the original cathedral, and therefore the president hopes that there will be a contemporary architectural vision,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement on Wednesday.

The computer-generated images and published on the Internet included several high-gloss glass designs to replace the 91-meter tower that was added to the cathedral in the mid-19th century to replace a medieval tower that was removed in 1786.

But this seems to be an exaggerated ambition for many French people, especially those with traditional ideas.

In an online poll conducted by the conservative Le Figaro newspaper, more than 70 percent of the 35,000 respondents said they opposed any contemporary design of the tower.
