Turkey’s FM Çavuşoğlu: “We Must Take into Account the Concerns of the Atlantic Alliance”

Turkey confirmed on Friday that it is aware of the concerns of its allies in NATO on the purchase of Russian defense system, which led to a great tension in relations between Ankara and Washington.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu told a news conference in Ankara: “We must take into account the concerns of the Atlantic alliance … to say that Turkey does not take this into account in error.”

He was talking about Ankara’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system, which is supposed to be delivered to Turkey this summer despite strong opposition from the United States.

Washington has called on Turkey to choose between the Russian system and F-35 fighter jets, of which Ankara wants 100.

At the beginning of April, the United States suspended delivery of ground equipment related to the operation of F-35s designed to communicate in real time with NATO military systems, including missile defense.

The United States is concerned that the S-400 technology will be used to collect technological data from NATO military aircraft.

“We do not recognize the claims that the S-400 batteries could penetrate F-35 systems if deployed in Turkey,” Çavuşoğlu  said, recalling that Ankara had proposed forming a working group to study Washington’s concerns.

“We have not received any response yet from the United States, but NATO has accepted our proposal with satisfaction.”
