Study: Facebook Users Became More Angry and Divided

As a recent study revealed that users of social networking site become more angry and divided than ever before, while the most common content focuses on hot issues, including abortion, religion and guns.

According to the Daily Mail website, the results were detailed in a new study by NewsWhip to track social media participation, just over a year after Facebook announced the change of algorithm, which shook the social publishing world.

“We’ve been looking at how Facebook has been sharing and interacting with content since the beginning of the year and comparing it with previous years,” the researchers said.

In January, Facebook announced some major changes to its “news summary” algorithm and will begin to prioritize family and friends partnerships across media and corporate content. At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he hoped the change would lead to a vision “Personal moments lead us to communicate more with each other.”

“The research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it may be beneficial to our wellbeing, we can feel more connected and less united,” Zuckerberg said at the time.

NewsWhip has compiled a list of “most shared web content” on Facebook so far this year, and the results show how the site has become a highly toxic environment.
