Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam on Friday evening. They protested against the so-called 2G policy whereby people only receive a corona pass when they have been vaccinated or cured. The demonstration then turned into riots.
Rioters set off heavy fireworks, set fires in several places and threw objects at the police. Seven people were injured and 51 arrests were made.

‘No fatality’
Two protesters were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. It is being investigated whether it concerns police bullets. Yesterday, the police had already reported that officers had fired warning shots and that targeted shots were fired ‘at several moments’. “We will investigate exactly what happened,” said the Rotterdam chief public prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar, who added that more arrests were expected.
Officers were also injured in the disturbances. One of them had to go to hospital with a leg injury, another officer was treated by paramedics.
There are reports on social media about a fatality, but the Rotterdam police vehemently deny this. “Stories are still going around that someone was said to have died during the riots on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam on Friday evening and night. This is NOT the case,” the police said on Twitter.

On Saturday afternoon, a demonstration in Breda mobilized several hundred people. The demonstration was allowed and went without incident. A similar action in Amsterdam was canceled after the riots in Rotterdam. Nevertheless, a thousand demonstrators turned up at Dam Square in the center of the capital. The demonstration ended around 6 p.m., NOS reports. It remained quiet.
Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb spoke afterwards of ‘an orgy of violence’ in the center of Rotterdam. According to the mayor, the police have now “backed power” in the heart of the city. On Saturday morning, Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus called the riots “repulsive to watch”. The minister also acknowledged that the corona measures are causing a great deal in society, and there must be a vigorous debate about this. “Intimidation and violence do not belong there. Protesting is a great right in our society, but what we saw last night is simply criminal behavior.”
