Brazilian Court Decides to Return Former President to Prison

The Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro has decided to return former Brazilian President Michel Tamer to prison during his investigation into several corruption-related cases.

Tamer was arrested on March 21 in Sao Paulo on suspicion of leading a criminal group involved in corruption and was released four days later by court order.

A few days later, he was charged with new corruption related to the complex of the Angra hydroelectric station on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

According to Brazilian media, the judges of the Federal Court, mentioned above, agreed by two votes to one vote, the need for the former president remained in prison during the investigation period. The same decision was issued by retired military police colonel Joao Batista Lima.

At the end of March, a Brazilian judge decided to release former President Tamer after several days of detention as part of an investigation aimed at fighting corruption in the country.

Michel Tamer came to power in August 2016 after Dalia Rousseff, the left-wing president, was sacked on charges of forging public accounts. He was a vice-president and center-right.

He was forced to relinquish power after right-winger Jair Paulsonaro won the presidential election last January, as Tamer’s popularity has dropped dramatically due to his corruption-ridden state.
