Italy’s Unemployment Rate Drops in First Quarter

In Italy, the unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2020 was 8.9% after 9.7% in the fourth quarter of 2019. Work, unemployment in the first quarter drops to 10.4%.

In the first quarter of 2019, the unemployment rate, after the growth of the previous quarter, decreased in economic terms, reaching 10.4% (-0.2 points). Istat communicates this, also indicating that the inactivity rate remains stable at 34.3% in three months.

After two consecutive drops, in the first quarter of 2019 the number of employed people started to grow again, albeit slightly, in economic terms (+25 thousand, + 0.1%), following the increase in permanent and independent employees that more than compensated for the reduction of fixed-term employees. For Istat, the employment rate rises to 58.7% (+0.1 points). In the most recent monthly data (April 2019), net of seasonality, the employment rate and the number of employees remain unchanged compared to March 2018, a summary of the drop in the number of independent workers and the growth of employees, especially in the short term.

For the employment rate, the rising rate is the synthesis of the increase for women (+0.3 points) and stability for men. «The growth in the North (+0.4 points) is offset by the decrease in the Center and in the South (-0.1 points in both cases)» points out Istat according to which the cyclical increase in the number of employees is the result growth in permanent employees (+47 thousand, + 0.3%) and self-employed (+7 thousand, + 0.1%) against a decrease in fixed-term employees (-29 thousand, -1.0%) . In the same period the unemployment rate decreased in economic terms, reaching 10.4% (-0.2 points) while the inactivity rate remained stable at 34.3% in three months.
