However, in June 2011, Denis Burdakov and his team of researchers from the University of Manchester conducted a study that showed that there were other causes that explained the sleep caused by a hearty meal.

The whole mystery of why we feel like sleeping after eating lies in glucose. When we eat, glucose levels increase and this causes orexins to decrease. Orexins are hormones that are created in the hypothalamus and are responsible for keeping us alert. According to Denis Burdakov’s study, a slight change in glucose levels already has effects on our body and causes us to fall asleep.

It is important to keep in mind that foods made of carbohydrates and fats cause more sleep than foods that provide us with protein.

Today, most of us lead a rhythm of life that does not allow us to sleep after eating, quite the contrary. We need to keep working and therefore stay active throughout the day.

As we have mentioned, food and sleep are closely related to each other. In the same way that if we eat a lot it will make us sleepy, it also happens to the contrary. Many times we will suffer insomnia if we are hungry. We find the explanation in evolution: our ancestors had to be alert to look for food, to sharpen their senses and find food, while when they had already eaten they had to sleep and rest to make the most of the energy they had just acquired.

We must bear in mind that currently energy wear is not at specific times, but that the working day makes us need to stay alert throughout the day.

Thus, despite taking into account the relationship between glucose levels with food and sleep, we must prioritize a good rest and quality sleep in order to face the day with more energy. Resting at night and giving up during the day will improve our quality of life.
